St. John Long's Liniment

can speak confidently of it. It js named St. John Long's liniment, and is made as follows Oil of turpentine 3 ozs., acetic acid 2 ozs., the yolks of two eggs, water 6 ozs. First rub the yolks of the_ eggs, the water, and the acetic acid together, then add the oil of turpentine, and mix well by agitation. The liniment thus made is of the colour and consistency of cow's milk, and has?to me?an agreeable odour, though somewhat pungent. To those who dislike the smell of turpentine, or acetic acid, a few drops of any of the essential oils added to the liniment, will render it more pleasing. As a rubefacient I have found it quite as efficacious as any of the liniments of the pharmacopoeia. It should be applied on a sponge, or a piece of flannel, and its efficacy is greatly increased if the sponge or flannel have been previously pressed or wrung out of hot water. I consider the preparation an excellent rubefacient, and worthy of notice for the following reasons : 1st.?Its elicacv in its results beinp equal to any of the other _ rubefacient liniments of the British Pharmacopoeia; ?nd, its cleanliness and sightly milky appearance being devoid of the greasy, staining or discolouring properties of the Pharinacopcnial preparations; 3rd, its cost?a matter of much importance in large hospitals?about four annas per pound, while compound mustard linimentfLiniment. sinapis comp. 15. P.) which is frequently used, costs OTer four rupees per pound. _ The liniment, terebinth, acetic. II. P. may be taken to represent Long's liniment, but I have never found it as efficacious as the latter ; it is moreover a greasy, unsightly, strong-smelling preparation, and it costs four times as much. This ling's liniment is also peculiarly adapted for the use of women and children, or where cleanliness is a desideratum. I have frequently used it with benefit in phthisis, bronchitis hooping cough and croup. It may be also made by substituting vinegar for the acetic acid and omitting the water. W. M. COURTNKV,
